Telford is mostly an industrial town where a large portion of the population work in manual work in industrial units on industrial estates. Others do manual work for the telford and wrekin council. Many are tradesmen, plumbers and bricklayers and so on. A second major aspect of Telford is it's military installations such as base ordnance depot in donnington. Donnington is traditionally the district where civil servants have lived as it is close to the MoD establishment. Telford has many ex-army people who settled there after their set number of years of service, the local housing being conveniently nearby after living in the barracks at donnington or the married quarters there. There is a major territorial army prescence in Telford with a number of TA centres sited there. As a military and industrial town, Telford was deeemed unsuitable for a universirty by the Dept of Education in the 1970's. Telford is not a place where gays and lesbians are welcome, quite the opposite as you would expect from the army and national front.
