Bagshot, Surrey.
Bagshot used to be the home of a Sun Microsystems office, there is very little in Bagshot, it's main economy thrives upon neccesity items of food and alcohol. This economy is demonstrated when walking down Bagshot's High Street (as opposed to the other street) Notable businesses in Bagshot are. Herbies pizza, the 3 chinese take-aways (one of which is suffering an identity crisis and also serves fish and chips), two newsagents (more about local news later), one Somerfield, five pubs, an off-license and a hand full of cafes.
Local History
Some archeologist recons Bagshot has pubs dating back 1000 years, also apparantly a brothel existed in Bagshot and was revealed by a programme called London Today. In uncovering it they may have destroyed the only interesting thing in Bagshot.
Local News
Local news is very drab nothins really happens so they make an awfully big deal about very little, I bought a newspaper for amusement and learnt of the trail of destruction left by "mindless vandals" which was discovered by the librarian who was horrified to find a squashed plant and a broken bottle. The cause of this terrible crime was evident on the next page the local cinema had closed leaving nothing for anyone to do, let alone the kids who have yet to accept the mindless existence required to survive around Bagshot.
Photo Tour
In this photo you seen the central square of Bagshot. The bank with the cash machine.
Hidden behind the white van is Herbies Pizza, and and the far left you can see the corner
of Somerfield's car park.
In this photo you see the pinnacle of bagshot architectural interest, the viaduct which
brings the town's water... not really, it's a railway bridge. If you look carefully
you can see the "fish and chips" sign of the chinese take-away.
Summary
Stop here for sarnies and a pint on your way to somewhere with something to do. But don't try to live here.
After a two hour stop over in Bagshot, I'd recommend the Herbie's Pizza shop for a Cheese Garlic bread supreme thingy, shame they don't deliver 150 miles! The boozer opposite Somerfield seems friendly too.
Rod - Nottingham
Bagshot is a fine village, with historical, archialogical and political importance. Bagshot is of Saxon origin, originally in a parish with Windlesham. Coaching inns were the major reason for Bagshot's original prosperity (the village is on the main road from London to the West Country), together with a Royal hunting lodge favoured by the Stuart kings (now known as Bagshot Park and which is again a Royal residence with its occupation by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex).
It has provided a friendly and fun atmosphere for the residents for many years. With the opportunity to party all night long in the many pubs provided and the nightclub (pantiles), which has been a major attraction for the youth since the 1920's.
Rod from Nottingham is a narrow minded idiot, who has no clue about culture, the economics or history of Bagshot. Maybe he should take a look at certain aspects of where he lives before he starts putting forward needless idiotic points about somewhere he knows little about. For example a very low crime rate in Bagshot compared to Nottingham speaks for itself as do the comparison of unemployment rates.
To our anonymous ranter,
Before having a go at Rod you should have got your facts straight, he didn't write the article, I did and while Rod may not have spent much time there, I did so I know full well that there is nothing there that can't be found in any town with two streets.
Your post seems to be filled out with boring waffle I would expect from someone who has spent too much time in such a dull place. You may notice that I didn't claim that Bagshot lacked an interesting history. What I did say is that it a boring place to live. As for partying all night in pubs, that may be the case now with late night opening, but when I was there they were filled with boring men slowly sipping pints of lager while reading the Daily Mail and smoking a pipe (not that I have anything against pipes).
As to your point about the low crime-rate in Bagshot, you might notice that I alluded to that too, the only crime being someone having broken a bottle and having stumbled onto a plant perhaps due to the imbalance caused by drinking the contents of the bottle. The main reason Bagshot's unemployment rate is so low is because the houses cost so much that those likely to be unemployed can't afford to live there. Having been to Nottingham I have to say I'd much rather live there.
It would seem that nothing in Bagshot has really changed since the days when it's main importance was as a momentary stopping place for those travelling to better places, the coaching inns having been replaces with B&Bs that don't serve breakfast.
